Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 2, 2026
Dormeet (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is a mobile application for verified college students that helps you find compatible roommates, make friends, buy and sell items on campus, and take part in campus community features. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect your personal information when you use the Dormeet app.
By using Dormeet, you agree to the collection and use of your information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
1. Information We Collect
1a. Information You Provide
- Account information: Your college email address (a verified .edu address), or a personal email address if you apply as an incoming student. We sign you in with a one time code sent to that email address. Dormeet does not use or store account passwords and does not offer sign in through social media accounts.
- Profile information: Full name, gender, pronouns (optional), college year, major, college or university and campus, hometown, country, ethnicity (optional), religion (optional, with a “Prefer not to say” choice), hobbies, bio, Snapchat username (optional), and profile photos.
- Application details (incoming students): If you apply before you start college, your high school, graduation year, expected start term, the schools you are considering, and, if you are looking for a roommate, a short description of what you are looking for.
- Preferences and lifestyle: Sleep schedule, cleanliness level, noise preference, social preference, study habits, guest frequency, smoking and drinking habits, budget range, Greek life interest, what you are looking for on Dormeet (such as a roommate or friends), and visibility choices such as hiding yourself from the roommate or friends decks.
- Live status: Your current availability status (for example, “Available,” “Looking for roommate,” “Open to connect”).
- User generated content: Content you create in the app, including messages and photos you send to other users, marketplace listings, Closet listings and Closet “Looking for” requests, student ticket listings, requests, and offers, sublease listings, lost and found posts, events, daily campus photos, group chats and group posts, course reviews, campus feed posts, photos, polls and votes, GIFs you send, and comments.
- Marketplace and sublease details: Item or listing title, description, price, category, condition, images, brand, tags, and pickup or location details you choose to include in a listing.
- Closet details: For Closet listings, whether the item is for sale, for rent, or to lend, the price or rental price and period, size, category, event tags, condition, and photos. For Closet “Looking for” requests, the title, note, size, budget, date needed, and up to three reference photos. Comments you post on Closet listings and requests are shown with your name. We also count how many times each Closet listing is viewed and saved.
- Safety actions: Reports you submit (including the reason and any details you add), users you block, and users you unmatch.
- AI bio input: When you use our optional AI bio writer, certain profile facts (such as your major, year, and hobbies) are sent to our AI provider to generate a suggested bio for you to review. Your name, gender, pronouns, and religion are never sent. See section 8.
- AI application review input: If you are an incoming student and agree in the app, your application answers are sent to our AI provider to help review your application. Your email, phone number, and photos are never sent. See section 8.
1b. Information Collected Automatically
- Device information: Device type, operating system, and app version, collected through the Expo framework.
- Request logs: When the app talks to our servers, we keep a short security log of each request: the time, the type of request, whether it succeeded, how long it took, and the IP address it came from. It never includes your messages or what you typed. We use it to detect abuse and fix outages, and it is deleted after 30 days.
- Push notification token: If you allow notifications, we store a unique push token for your device so we can send you notifications about new matches, messages, comments, and group invites, and a daily campus photo reminder. Notifications are delivered through the Expo push service and Apple’s push service. They name the person or item involved but never include the text of your messages. You can turn off each type of notification in Settings, or turn off all notifications in your device settings.
- Usage data: Actions such as likes and passes, matches, saved listings, and message read status.
- Listing views: When you open a marketplace or Closet listing, we record that your account viewed it and when. We use these records to count views, to rank popular listings, and to keep view counts from being inflated. Sellers see only the total number of views and saves, never who viewed or saved their listing.
- Local storage: Theme preferences and cached data stored locally on your device.
1c. Information We Do Not Collect
Dormeet does not collect your device location. The app does not request location permission and contains no location tracking. Any campus, hometown, or pickup information associated with your account comes only from what you type into your profile or a listing, not from your device’s GPS or location services.
1d. Sensitive Personal Information
Some information you can add is considered sensitive under certain state laws: your religion, your ethnicity, and pronouns that may indicate that you are transgender or nonbinary.
- Religion, ethnicity, and pronouns are all optional. We collect them only after you choose to add them and confirm in the app that you want them on your profile. When you confirm, we store a record of your consent, with the date and time, on our servers. If you add them, they are shown on your profile to verified students at your campus and can be used as matching filters. We never use them for advertising, never sell them, never send them to our AI provider, and never use them to train AI models. You can remove them at any time in Edit Profile, which withdraws your consent.
- Gender is required. It is shown on your profile, used to show you roommate matches of the same gender, and used to decide access to Closet, a section of the marketplace for women students. Gender is chosen during onboarding and cannot be changed after onboarding. If it was entered incorrectly, contact support@dormeet.com.
1e. Camera and Photo Library
With your permission, Dormeet uses your device camera to take your daily campus photo and photos you send in chat, and uses your photo library so you can add photos to your profile, listings, Closet, chats, events, groups, the campus feed, and lost and found posts, and save photos you receive in chats. We only access the camera or photo library when you actively use these features, and you can change these permissions at any time in your device settings. Dormeet never requests the microphone and does not collect audio.
1f. Crash and Performance Diagnostics
When the app crashes or encounters an error, it sends a diagnostic report (such as the error, the app version, device model, and operating system version) and basic performance measurements to Sentry, our crash reporting provider. These reports are not linked to your name, email, or profile, are not used for advertising or tracking, and are used only to find and fix problems in the app.
1g. Website Forms
When you join the waitlist, request your school, or apply to be a campus ambassador on dormeet.com, we collect your school email address and the school you name, and, for ambassador applications, your full name. When you join the waitlist, we send you one confirmation email and use your email to tell you when Dormeet launches at your school. We use your IP address briefly to limit how many times a form can be sent, to prevent abuse. The website has no advertising or tracking cookies. To be removed, email support@dormeet.com.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information for the following purposes:
- Moderation: Automatic checks hold some content for a person: text filters on our server, and Amazon Rekognition on photos. No outside AI reads campus feed text.
- Account creation and authentication: To verify that you are a student at a supported campus and to sign you in securely with one-time passcodes.
- Profile matching: To show you compatible roommate and friend matches based on your preferences, lifestyle, and interests.
- Messaging and community: To deliver messages between users and to power the marketplace, Closet, student tickets, subleases, lost and found, events, groups, campus photos, course reviews, and the campus board.
- Campus scoping and access: To limit what you see and who can see you to your own campus community, and to limit Closet to women students.
- AI bio writer: To generate a suggested profile bio when you choose to use the feature.
- Application review: To review incoming student applications and keep the community real and safe, with the help of our AI provider only if you agree.
- Push notifications: To alert you about new matches, messages, comments, and group invites, with your permission. You choose which types you get in Settings.
- Safety and moderation: To screen uploaded photos and text for objectionable content, investigate reports, act on blocks, enforce our Terms, prevent banned users from signing up again, and maintain a safe environment.
- App improvement: To understand how features are used, fix crashes and errors, and improve the Dormeet experience.
3. How We Share Your Information
3a. With Other Dormeet Users
Your profile information (such as name, photos, bio, gender, major, year, hometown, hobbies, lifestyle answers, live status, and, if you add them, pronouns, ethnicity, religion, and Snapchat username) is visible to other students on your campus. Your email address is never shown to other users. Matched users can exchange messages. Marketplace listings, ticket listings, sublease listings, and community posts are visible to other students at your campus.
- Closet: Closet listings, Closet “Looking for” requests, and their comments are visible in the app only to verified women students at your campus who have completed onboarding. Comments show the commenter’s name. Sellers see how many times a listing was viewed or saved, never who viewed or saved it. Closet photos are delivered the same way as other listing photos (see section 6).
- Campus feed and anonymous posts: Campus feed posts, photos, poll answers and votes, comments on them, and anything you choose to post anonymously in a group, a course review or the waitlist board are shown to other students without your name. They are anonymous to other students only: every post stays linked to your account on our servers so that we can act on reports and enforce our Terms. We remove location and device data from campus feed photos before publishing.
- Our moderation team: A small number of authorized Dormeet team members can view reported content, the report, and the account details needed to act on it, using an internal moderation tool.
Blocking a user hides you and that user from each other across the app.
3b. With Service Providers (Subprocessors)
We use the following third-party service providers to operate the app. Our application data is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United States.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS): Provides our core infrastructure in the United States (us-east-1 region), including an Amazon RDS (PostgreSQL) database for application data, Amazon S3 for media storage (profile, listing, chat, and campus photos), Amazon Cognito for authentication, Amazon Rekognition for automated image content moderation of every uploaded photo, Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) for delivering sign in codes and waitlist confirmation emails, and Amazon CloudFront and AWS WAF, which carry requests to our API and media and use your IP address to route traffic and limit abuse. See AWS Privacy. Amazon Rekognition screens every uploaded photo. On a campus feed photo it also counts faces so that a person on our team can review it first. We keep only the count. We do not store, compare or recognize faces.
- Anthropic (Claude API): Processes the profile facts sent by the AI bio writer (such as major, year, and hobbies, never your name, gender, pronouns, or religion) to generate an AI bio suggestion, and, for incoming students who agree, the application answers listed in section 8 to help review an application. Each is used only after you agree in the app. See Anthropic’s Privacy Policy.
- Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.): Receives crash and performance diagnostics that are not linked to your name, email, or profile, so we can fix errors. See Sentry’s Privacy Policy.
- GIPHY: Provides the GIFs you can search and send in chats, group chats, group posts, comments and on the campus feed. You can turn GIFs off in Settings. Your device connects to GIPHY directly, so GIPHY receives your IP address, your GIF search words, and which GIFs were shown, tapped, or sent, along with a random identifier GIPHY issues for this install. We do not send GIPHY your name, email, account, or anything you post. GIPHY’s own policy governs what it receives. It says GIPHY does not sell or share personal data and stores it using industry standard techniques. See GIPHY’s Privacy Policy.
- Open-Meteo: Provides the weather on the Dean page. Your device asks it for the weather at your campus, so Open-Meteo receives your IP address and your campus’s location, never your own location, name or account. See Open-Meteo’s terms and privacy.
- Expo: Provides the app framework and delivers push notifications using your device’s push token. See Expo’s Privacy Policy.
- Microsoft 365: Hosts our support inbox, so it receives the emails you send to support@dormeet.com.
3c. For Legal Reasons
We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or government request, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the safety, rights, or property of Dormeet, our users, or the public.
3d. Business Transfers
If Dormeet is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any such change.
3e. We Do Not Sell Your Data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes.
4. Data Retention
- Campus feed: Campus feed posts, polls, votes and photos are deleted when you delete them or your account. Reports and a moderator’s record of them are kept as described above, and text held because it reads as self harm is kept for moderators until reviewed or the account is deleted.
- Active accounts: We retain your data as long as your account is active.
- Messages: Retained until either account in the conversation is deleted.
- Listings and posts: Marketplace and Closet listings, Closet requests, ticket listings, sublease listings, and community posts are retained until you delete them or your account is deleted. Content removed by our moderators is hidden from other users and kept for review until the account that posted it is deleted.
- Usage, match, and listing view data: Retained for the duration of your account.
- AI bio: The facts you submit are used to generate a bio for you to review. We do not use them to train AI models. See section 8.
- Deleted photos: When you delete a photo, it is removed from our storage and its cached copy on our content delivery network is cleared. A copy that a device already downloaded can remain on that device.
- Account deletion: When you delete your account in the app, we immediately delete your account, your profile, your photos and other uploaded media, listings, Closet listings and requests, posts, comments, likes, passes, matches, saves, listing view records, blocks, and the messages in your conversations (for both you and the other person), and we delete your sign in account. Cached copies of photos on our content delivery network are cleared when you delete your account, and copies in our encrypted database backups and system logs expire within 30 days.
- Safety records kept after deletion: Reports filed by or about your account are kept as safety records so that repeat offenders can be identified. If our moderators remove an account for violating our Terms, we keep a scrambled fingerprint (hash) of its sign in identifier, together with the reason for removal, so it cannot be used to sign up again. We keep safety records for up to 3 years after the account is deleted unless a longer period is required by law. Shared campus entries you created, such as a course page or a board topic title, remain without your name.
5. Your Rights and Choices
All Users
- Edit your profile: Update or remove your profile information at any time, except gender, which cannot be changed after onboarding (contact us if it is wrong).
- Delete your account: Delete your account directly within the app from the Profile tab, Settings, Delete account. Your data is deleted immediately as described in section 4, and backup copies expire within 30 days.
- Manage notifications: Turn each type of notification on or off in Settings, or turn off all push notifications in your device settings.
- Withdraw consent: Remove your religion, ethnicity, or pronouns in Edit Profile at any time, which withdraws your consent for that information, and turn off the AI bio writer in Settings.
- Manage camera and photos: Grant or revoke camera and photo library access in your device settings.
- Block and report: Block, unmatch, or report other users and content at any time from within the app.
U.S. State Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live (for example Connecticut, Virginia, Colorado, Oregon, or Texas), you may have the right to confirm whether we process your personal data, to access it and receive a portable copy, to correct it, to delete it, to withdraw consent for sensitive data, and to opt out of targeted advertising, the sale of personal data, and profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects. Dormeet does not do targeted advertising, does not sell personal data, and does not use profiling for those decisions.
To make a request, email support@dormeet.com from the email on your account with the subject “Privacy request.” We respond within 45 days. If we decline, you may appeal by replying with the subject “Privacy appeal.” We respond to appeals within 60 days and will explain our decision. If you disagree, you may contact your state Attorney General.
California Residents
If you are a California resident, you may have the following rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act:
- Right to know: Request details about what personal information we collect and how it is used.
- Right to delete: Request deletion of your personal information.
- Right to correct: Request correction of inaccurate personal information.
- Right to opt out of sale: We do not sell your personal information, so no opt-out is necessary.
- Right to limit use of sensitive information: You may request that we limit the use of sensitive personal information (such as ethnicity, religion, and gender) to what is necessary to provide the service.
- Right to non-discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.
To exercise these rights, contact us at support@dormeet.com. We will respond within the time required by law.

To exercise these rights, contact us at support@dormeet.com.
6. Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including:
- Data transmitted between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit using TLS/HTTPS.
- Sign in uses one time codes sent to your school email rather than stored passwords.
- Application data is stored in access-controlled AWS services in the United States.
- Photos you send in private chats are stored in access controlled storage and shown only through signed links that expire after one hour. Profile, marketplace, Closet, sublease, event, lost and found, campus, and group photos are shown in the app through our content delivery network at long, randomly generated web addresses that are hard to guess. Anyone who has one of these addresses can open that image, so only post photos you are comfortable with being shared.
- Uploaded images are automatically screened for unsafe content before they are published, and image moderation fails closed (an image is not published if it cannot be checked).
- Authentication tokens are stored securely on your device.
No system is completely secure. While we strive to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you become aware of a security issue, please contact us immediately.
7. Eligibility and Children’s Privacy
Dormeet is intended for verified college and university students who are 16 years of age or older, as required by our Terms of Service. When you sign up, you confirm that you are 16 or older. If we learn that a user is under 16, we will remove the account and delete its information. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete that information promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@dormeet.com.
8. AI Features Disclosure
Dormeet offers two optional AI features, the AI bio writer and the AI application review for incoming students. Dormeet has no AI chatbot. Before it is used for the first time, the app asks for your permission, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings. With your permission, only the profile facts listed on that prompt (your school, year, major, hometown, hobbies, lifestyle answers, what you are looking for, where you plan to live, and Greek life interest) are sent to Anthropic’s Claude API to generate a suggested bio. Your name, gender, pronouns, religion, and ethnicity are never sent. You can review, edit, or discard the result before it is saved to your profile. Requests are made from our servers, and the AI provider key is never included in the app.
AI application review. Incoming students who apply before they start college may agree, at the last step of the application, to have their answers reviewed with the help of Anthropic’s Claude API. With that permission, your first name, high school, graduation year, expected start term, the schools you are considering, major, hometown, bio, what you are looking for, hobbies, how many photos you added, and whether they passed our photo check are sent to help review your application. Your email, phone number, and photos are never sent. With that permission, Dean AI may approve your application automatically; only our team rejects one. You can withdraw this permission at any time in Settings, and our team then reviews your application. An application without this permission is reviewed by a person.
AI generated content may not always be accurate. We do not collect, use, or sell personal data to train large language models. Under Anthropic’s commercial terms, data sent through its API is not used to train its models.
9. International Data Transfers
Dormeet is operated from the United States, and our servers and service providers are located in the United States. If you access the app from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to, stored in, and processed in the United States. By using Dormeet, you consent to this transfer.
10. Third-Party Links
The app may contain links to third-party services (such as Snapchat profiles). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party services. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing them with your information.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you through the app or by other means before the changes take effect. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of Dormeet after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
